Incidents reported last week include seizures of counterfeit designer goods in Macedonia.... The UK’s largest-ever raid of pirated films has taken place yielding more than 800,000 DVDs… During the week, a number of other seizures of pirated DVDs and CDs took place in many countries including Australia, India, Ireland, Mexico, South Africa and the USA… More counterfeit drugs have been destroyed by Nigerian authorities as part of their continued crack down.
Policy developments reported last week include new legislation under consideration in the EU, which will make infringement of intellectual property rights a criminal offence and could carry a $240,000 fine and/or four years' imprisonment… The prime Minister of Pakistan has asked the State Bank to formulate a new law to deal with counterfeiting offences in the country… In Canada the federal government plans to introduce legislation that would make it a crime to use handheld cameras to record films in movie theatres… The Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) announced that it will introduce a new scheme of sample testing over the next six months to cut down on counterfeit drugs.
Studies reported last week include a report by the Canadian Anti-Counterfeiting Network (CACN) outlining the threats posed by counterfeiting and piracy in Canada... A study to be released in New Delhi points out that counterfeit auto products like gear parts, oil seals, filters, gaskets and brake liners are flooding the Indian market.
