Large quantities of fake perfume was seized in two separate raids; in Romania 20 tonnes of assorted brands was impounded, while in the UK 20,000 bottles of counterfeit Coco Chanel perfume was seized... 15,000 pieces of Chinese-made fake Tiffany jewellery were seized in the UK after police tracked down the person selling the counterfeits via eBay... In the Philippines, a huge seizure of counterfeit Procter and Gamble and Speedo goods took place at a number of locations.
Cases and outcomes include in China, two people charged with producing and selling more than ten tonnes of counterfeit pharmaceuticals stand trial. The fake medicine was estimated to have been sold to 17,000 people... In South Korea, two men have been arrested for allegedly selling 53,000 pieces of luxury goods over a two-year period.
Policy developments include in Nigeria, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control is calling for harsher punishments for people selling fake pharmaceuticals after China sentenced six people to death for exporting drugs to Nigeria... As of 1 January 2010 a new law to combat internet piracy comes into effect in France; illegal downloaders will first be sent a warning e-mail, then a warning letter and eventually will have to appear before a judge if they continue to offend. |
