Seizures and discoveries include a number by the US Customs and Border Protection earlier this year, yielding more than 420,000 counterfeit integrated circuits and computer network components, bearing 50 different fake trademarks… A massive raid took place in Canada on 91 businesses, seizing over C$4 million worth of assorted counterfeit goods… In India, police have seized over 20,000 pirated film discs and arrested one man.
In the UK, HM Revenue & Customs are warning of counterfeit Nintendo consoles that could put the users’ lives at risk. The fake consoles were found to have potentially dangerous power adapters.
Cases and outcomes last week include the trial in the UK, of two gangs involved in a massive counterfeit cigarette smuggling plot. The gangs allegedly traded more that 123 million fake cigarettes, evading tax duty of more than £18 million… Microsoft has launched 63 legal filings against people in 12 countries for selling pirated versions of their software on online auction sites. In Australia, two men have been arrested and charged for operating an online international movie piracy racket through a website, which had over 400,000 members worldwide.
Studies and reports out last week include one carried out by Environics Research, which found that in Canada 63 percent of people polled wanted tougher regulations against counterfeit goods.
