The operation was a five-month investigation into counterfeit pharmaceuticals in South East Asia and yielded 16 million fake pills worth approximately $6.65 million… Similarly in Spain, 90,000 fake Viagra pills have been seized… Assorted fake goods worth hundreds of thousands of pounds and Euros were impounded after a number of raids at markets in the UK and Ireland.
Cases and outcomes last week include the first person to be convicted of movie piracy in Canada under new anti-piracy legislation, after being caught recording a film in a theatre… In Australia, the film industry has launched an action to sue iiNet- the second largest ISP in the country- claiming it is complicit in the infringement of copyrighted material… A doctor and his wife in the US have been convicted on charges of adulterating a drug after injecting patients with fake Botox… Also in the US, authorities are seeking a man who was allegedly caught with 600,000 counterfeit condoms.
Policy developments
last week include the US Food and Drug Administration deploying staff abroad to work directly with importers to guard against contaminated animal feed, counterfeit drugs, toys made with lead paint and dairy products containing melamine.
