Seizures and discoveries last week include in the UK, trading standards officers impounding over £500,000 worth of counterfeit Nike trainers that were going to be sold on online auction site eBay… Similarly, in the UK, two raids have taken place seizing £200,000 worth of pirated DVDs and £60,000 worth of fake clothing… In India, police have raided a house seizing over 135,000 pirated CDs.

Cases and outcomes last week include a man in the UK being sentenced to 3 years in jail for his part in a multimillion-pound international counterfeit pharmaceutical syndicate… In Singapore, a man has been jailed for 15 months after being convicted of selling pirated DVDs.

Policy developments last week include in the US, the Anti-piracy PRO-IP bill being signed into law. The bill creates an intellectual property official, who will report directly to the president on how to protect copyrights both domestically and internationally.

Studies and reports out last week include one from the Kenya Association of Manufacturers stating that Kenya is losing approximately $50 million to counterfeiting annually… In the UK, Entertainment Media Research released its latest Digital Music Survey.
