Seizures and discoveries last week include one that impounded 13,000 pirated books in India… US Customs and Border Protection officers intercepted a number of containers shipped from China that contained 28,784 pairs of fake Nike shoes and 78,460 counterfeit handbags of various trademarks… Pirated DVDs and CDs have been seized in a number of countries; 10,000 in Australia, 50,000 in the UK, and 7.5 million over a three month period in the Asia-Pacific region.

Cases and outcomes last week include two individuals and two corporations pleading guilty to charges of trafficking counterfeit toothpaste in the US. The defendants had trafficked over 500,000 tubes of counterfeit Colgate toothpaste into the country, some of it containing diethylene glycol… Two men in the US have been sentenced to 12 and 15 months in prison for pirating DVDs and gaming software respectively… In the UK a computer pirate has been ordered to pay £16,000 to an American computer games company after illegally sharing a game over the internet… Two DVD pirates in Hong Kong have been sentenced to 24 months in prison for breach of copyright law.

Policy developments last week include the UK computer games industry serving 25,000 people, who allegedly illegally downloaded games over the internet, a notice requiring them to pay £300 to immediately settle out of court.

Studies and reports out last week include ‘Counterfeit Car Parts in the Global Auto Industry ' by Report Buyer, which finds that the global market for counterfeit vehicle parts is worth $16 billion.
