Seizures and discoveries
of counterfeit goods last week include one that is reportedly the largest in Canadian history. 25,000 fake luxury items were found worth an estimated C$10 million and two men were arrested… In Kenya, a 40-foot container filled with counterfeit Bic pens has been impounded… Authorities in the Philippines have seized a large collection of pirated discs including CDs, DVDs and software… Also in China, 53,000 pirated DVDs were seized.

last week include a man in the US being sentenced to 30 months in prison for selling millions of dollars worth of counterfeit Cisco computer components… A man in Malaysia has been charged with supplying counterfeit spare car parts to the Royal Malaysia Police Force…Italy’s largest BitTorrent tracker site Colombo-BT.org has been shut down by the Italian police; the three men who ran the site have been charged with infringing copyright laws… The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has filed legal actions in the US federal court against FOMDB.com and MovieRumor.com for allegedly helping online pirates illegally access movies and TV shows… Nintendo has filed a lawsuit with the Tokyo District Court to stop the marketing, sale and importation from China of a memory cartridge that allows games on the Nintendo DS to be pirated.
Policy developments last week include the US senate introducing a new bill called Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights Act of 2008 (PDF); the bill is designed to incorporate both the PRO-IP and the PIRATE Acts.
