Seizures and discoveries last week include one in India that found over 700,000 counterfeit pain relieving tablets… The largest ever bust of bootleg music in the US state of New Mexico has taken place… Also in the US, almost $500,000 worth of counterfeit goods were seized at a Flea market… In Taiwan, police have raided a major DVD pirate factory seizing over 130,000 pirated discs and hundreds of optical disc burning towers.

Cases and outcomes last week include a man behind the biggest domestic pirate CD and DVD racket in the UK being jailed for 38 months; he was caught with over 400,000 pirated discs… A man in the US has been sentenced to four years in prison for selling counterfeit versions of software worth $1 million… Also, four British companies reached out-of-court settlements with the Business Software Alliance, following their use of illegal software…. Similarly in the US, the Software and Information Industry Association has said it may sue eBay over pirated software appearing on the auction site.

Policy developments last week include a group of senators in the US introducing the "Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights Act of 2008" to the Senate, which would allow the US Attorney General to bring civil actions against Americans that violate copyrights… In the UK, six major ISPs have made an agreement with the music industry to send warning letters to users suspected of illegal file sharing.

Studies and reports out last week include one from the Business Software Alliance that claims that software piracy in the US has cost the industry $11.4 billion.
