Cases and Outcomes reported last week include a man being sentenced to four and a half years in prison after the biggest counterfeit drugs seizure in British history. The man was described as the UK linchpin of a global conspiracy to sell fake medicines over the internet… Nintendo the video games maker is demanding South Korean prosecutors investigate domestic websites that have uploaded illegal copies of their games… Johnson & Johnson Inc. are suing a Canadian man for buying fake diabetes test strips from a supplier in China… The Business Software Alliance (BSA) has agreed a record €2.5 million settlement with an international media firm over unlicensed software.
Studies and reports out last week include one by Swedish customs which found that in the last five years smuggling of counterfeit goods has increased by 10 times… The Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) has done a study which reveals that piracy costs Ghanaian workers significant losses in jobs and earnings, and government, substantial lost tax revenue… A study done by Indian Market Research Bureau (IMRB) shows that the market share of fake auto parts in the country has trebled in the last seven years.
