Seizures and discoveries
include in the US, the biggest ever seizure of counterfeit goods in two operations worth approximately $240 million. Goods seized include watches, shoes, handbags, DVDs and pharmaceuticals... Other seizures in the US include $18.6 million worth of fake sunglasses, 15,000 pairs of fake Nike trainers and thousands of fake luxury handbags... In Singapore, police seized a large quantity of counterfeit electronic goods worth $3.7 million... In Taiwan, some 650,000 fake pharmaceuticals were seized and three suspects arrested... 50,000 cartons of fake cigarettes worth around $3.4 million have been impounded in Canada... Customs officers in Macedonia have seized a large quantity of counterfeit trainers, sunglasses and clothing.
Cases and outcomes
include two significant judgements regarding counterfeit Cisco network hardware. An operation called “Network Raider” resulted in the convictions of 30 people and more than 700 seizures of counterfeit Cisco hardware, originating in China. A Saudi man was also sentenced to four years in prison for selling counterfeit computer parts to the Marine Corps for use in Iraq and Afghanistan... A US court has awarded fashion house Versace $20 million in damages for trademark violations and wilful counterfeiting ... A court in Vietnam has imposed sentences totalling more than 21 years on six people convicted of producing and trading in counterfeit pharmaceuticals... Four men are to be sentenced in the UK after police discovered what they believe is the world's largest haul of "chipped" games consoles.
Studies and reports out include the publishing of the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, the first time it has been officially published since negotiations began.
